Friday Fill-Ins!

1. It was a dark and stormy night, when I curled up on the couch with a good book.

2. No one else wanted them, so I offered to take the books myself.

3. Rushing out, I forgot my phone.

4. Oh my God...I think I heard a howl!

5. Shhhh...they're coming.

6. Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat!

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to relaxing, tomorrow my plans include watching the Georgia/Florida game and maybe going out with some friends and Sunday, I want to watch more football and visit the in-laws!

*****************************************

It's been a weird week. I haven't been sleeping well most nights this week. I think it's stress.

I won my trial Wednesday.

Part of me just wants to stay in this weekend, but part of me wants to go out and get crazy. I guess we'll see which side wins...

As usual, I had a smashing good time during the Read-a-Thon. I exceeded my total number of pages read in the last Read-a-Thon, and I think also my time spent reading, too! This event is one of my favorite things that I've participated in as a book blogger. This RaT makes my third, which I can hardly believe.

Thanks to all of the organizers, Trish, Nymeth, Eva, and Hannah.

Thanks to all of you who came and cheered me on, both those I know and those I met for the first time. I'm afraid I'll be adding even MORE blogs to my Google Reader, now that I've discovered you!

And especially thanks to Dewey, although she is no longer with us. We will always remember her, especially when we come together as a community to do things like the Read-a-Thon. She was a wonderful community-builder, book blogger, and human being...she is missed.

End of Event Meme

1. Which hour was most daunting for you?

I would have to say Hour 14...that was when I first started falling asleep. I rallied for another few hours, but it was rough.

2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?

I don't know that my choices are what most people would consider "high-interest," lol. I enjoyed my book of essays, though.

3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?

None. It was great!

4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?

Everything!

5. How many books did you read?

Not even one. But my current book is something like 600 pages, so I knew I wouldn't finish it. I read a good deal of it, though!

6. What were the names of the books you read?

Shaking a Leg by Angela Carter

7. Which book did you enjoy most?

The only one I read.

8. Which did you enjoy least?

Doesn't really apply.

9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders?

N/A

10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?

Oh, I will definitely do this again. It's become one of my favorite things to do in October and April!

RaT: Hour Twenty-Three: Back in the Saddle

I'm awake! And off to do some more reading before the clock strikes 8! Thanks for all of your messages and support. You all rock!

Can I just tell you I love my Chinese place? SOOO much cheaper and MUCH better food that the place where we used to live. They give you three meals in one, just about. I've been picking at my dinner all night long.

I came back into the living room from the library, but I did start falling asleep a little bit on the couch. So I got up and walked around a bit to get the blood circulating and wake myself up. I'm drinking more caffeine as we speak.

RaT: Mid-Event Survey

1. What are you reading right now?

Still reading Shaking a Leg by Angela Carter. Still loving her take on literature, movies, TV, art, feminism, etc.

2. How many books have you read so far?

Just this one.

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?

I'd just like to finish this book, if possible.

4. Did you have to make any special arrangements to free up your whole day?

No special arrangements needed, since there was no (important) college football on today!

5. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?

Just my lovely husband. And I let him interrupt me. He'll be home from work again soon, so I expect I'll be interrupted a bit more. But he's actually been very good about letting me be. He told me today is for me...awww.

6. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?

How tired I am so early on. Sigh. Getting old is for the birds.

7. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?

NONE!

8. What would you do differently, as a Reader or a Cheerleader, if you were to do this again next year?

Nothing, really. This is my third RaT and I think I know what strategies work for me.

9. Are you getting tired yet?

Yes, but I'm ingesting more caffeine right now.

10. Do you have any tips for other Readers or Cheerleaders, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered?

Collections of short fiction or essays...and magazines. Things that keep a short attention span engaged!

Thinking about dinner sometime soon. I think I'll steal someone else's idea and order Chinese for dinner. I'm starting to get a little tired, so I'll be cracking open some more caffeine soon.

Mini Challenge: Collections

My husband and I are terrible packrats. We collect just about EVERYTHING.

The photo above illustrates several of our collections: CD's, movies, and candles.

We also collect cats. (Emaline is running away...guess she didn't want to have her picture taken.)

The Husband woke up during the last few hours, so I spent some time with him (and being distracted by him and the TV!), but he's gone to work now, so things are once again quiet. It was raining a few minutes ago, but it looks like it's stopped. Still in my jammies, haven't showered. I want to go visit and comment on a few folks' blogs and then back to reading!

P.S. Thanks to everyone who has left messages! I've really appreciated your support.

I'm really enjoying my book of essays. They are ALMOST as good as short stories for the Read-a-Thon! Since each one deals with a unique subject, I don't feel like I'm reading the same thing for an extended period of time. Plus Angela Carter's writing is fantastic.

I haven't been able to convince my husband to bring me some food, so I think I'll pop in a frozen pizza for lunch!

So far, so good on the reading front. I'm taking a quick break to check in with other readers, blog my updates, and do a mini-challenge or two.

Where are you reading from today? I'm reading from home...the recliner in my living room, the couch in my living room, the papasan chair in the library, maybe the bed, if my husband ever wakes up.

3 facts about me: (I hope these aren't the same ones I used last time)

1. I'm a lawyer.

2. I'm married.

3. I'm originally from Ohio.

How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours? I really only have one or two, but my TBR shelf runneth over with other choices, if I finish what I'm reading now!

Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)? I posted about this earlier. I'd love to be able to finish my current chunkster read. Mostly, though, just to have fun and read a lot. And not do any chores or work. :)

If you’re a veteran read-a-thoner, Any advice for people doing this for the first time? Take as many breaks as you need. Eat and drink what you want. Have FUN! Try a magazine if you get tired of your current read.

Pre-Read-a-Thon Post

The RaT starts in about forty minutes. I'm so pumped, I woke up before my alarm! I decided to get up and use the time to wake fully, drink some caffeine, and check my email before I lose myself in a book.

There's no Georgia game today, they have a bye week, so I don't have to choose between the RaT and my beloved Dawgs. The weather here in my neighborhood is currently 73 degrees and partly cloudy. It's supposed to get up to 86 today, with a possibility of rain showers this afternoon. That would make perfect reading weather!

Goals? I have lofty ones, yet simple. I would like to finish the book I'm currently reading, Shaking a Leg by Angela Carter. It's HUMONGOUS (like, 600 or so pages) and I'm only about 125 or 150 pages in, so just to finish that during the RaT would be an accomplishment for me. I'm not sure if I can hang on through a bunch of essays for that long, though, so I've picked out a couple alternatives: my Glamour magazine (magazines worked well for me in the last RaT) and maybe The Best American Mystery Stories 2008, which would be perfect for this time of the year!

Other than that, my goal is just to read as long and as many pages as possible, and NOT to think about tomorrow and all the work that has to be done before Monday. Read today, work tomorrow. Sometime.

Happy reading, everyone! Remember Dewey while you read!

Friday Fill-Ins!

1. The crickets sing, and I think of summer nights when I was a child.

2. I miss you, Harper, wherever you are.

3. I want to get far away from the hustle and bustle of my everyday life.

4. Singing on Broadway; this was a dream.

5. But as for me I'll be participating in Dewey's Read-a-Thon tomorrow.

6. Dayton is where I come from.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to getting a good night's sleep, tomorrow my plans include READ-A-THON and Sunday, I want to get some work done, carve a pumpkin, and watch the Dolphins' game!

Read-a-Thon Goodies

So, what do we have? Cheetos, three kinds of Pringles (Loaded Baked Potato, Pizza, and Sour Cream and Cheddar), Publix dipping chips, Publix spice drops, chocolate candy, and French Onion dip. I also have some frozen pizzas for dinner. I'm sure I'll make hubby run out and fetch me something for lunch, too. One of my favorite parts of the Read-a-Thon is the amount of junk food one gets to consume! I'll be drinking Diet Mountain Dew Ultra-Violet, water, and Propel.

Let's do this.

Mailbox Monday

It's Mailbox Monday again! Join Marcia at
The Printed Page to see what everyone else got in their mailboxes this week.

I received another two BookMooch books. And they are a continuation of my attempts to beef up my science fiction reading. They are both Andre Norton books: Daybreak 2250 A.D. (also published as Star Man's Son) and Witch World. The WW book is the very first one in the series. I'd like to collect them all (though God knows when I'll get a chance to read them).

In other news, Dewey's 24-Hour Read-a-Thon is coming up this weekend! This is one of my favorite blogosphere events. I cannot wait to spend my entire Saturday (and part of Sunday?) READING. I need to stock up on snacks, but I'm set for caffeine and books.

I made Rachael Ray's recipe for Aglio Olio (garlic and oil pasta) tonight. Usually I take a pic and post it, but this didn't really look spectacular. It was okay taste-wise (although I suspect that the hubby didn't really like it), but the finished product didn't really LOOK like much...plain ol' pasta! I have leftovers for work this week, at least. Next up, I'd like to try a homemade salad dressing from her original 30 Minute Meals cookbook. I'm really enjoying getting back into the kitchen!

Two Weeks' Worth of Friday Fill-Ins!

1. Sweet dreams are made of these.

2. Finding time to do it all is hard, especially for me.

3. Silliness is necessary to retain one's sanity.

4. I look forward to handing out candy this Halloween.

5. Outstanding or not, it doesn't matter.

6. More time in the day is what I want right now!

*********************************************

1. So are we going to my parents' together for Christmas?

2. The holiday season is what's up ahead.

3. I love to win the lottery.

4. I need a nap of some sort.

5. I walk a thin line between two personalities.

6. Love is the true elixir of life!

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to Google Reader, tomorrow my plans include spending time with the Gastons and Sunday, I want to hang out with my husband!

Sigh

Friday night, and I'm catching up on my Google Reader.

It's been an unproductive reading week here. I'm in the middle of Angela Carter's Shaking a Leg, which is a collection of her literary criticism and other articles she wrote, mostly for New Society. It covers a variety of topics and I'm finding that I quite enjoy her acidic writing style and thought-provoking pieces. She was a feminist of the 1970's variety, if anyone knows what I mean by that. I think they call it First-Wave Feminism? I'm not up on the lingo. I love her scathing review of Linda Lovelace's autobiography. (Linda Lovelace was, I believe, the "actress" who starred in Deep Throat...I had to ask my husband about that one!)

Anyway, this isn't meant to be an in-depth review of the work (I'm only about one sixth of the way through the monstrous thing). BUT what I'm trying to say is...I haven't gotten much accomplished on it this week. I was in jury selection Monday, which tired me out too much to read anything quite as heavy and intellectual as Carter's essays. And I was in trial Wednesday (well, supposed to be...), so I spent most of Tuesday night putting the final touches on my case. When the thing pled out on Wednesday, I was then too exhausted from the stress to pick up the book. All I could manage was Glee. Last night was a night full of TV with the hubby, so that leaves me...nowhere, really. I seem to get through more of the book when I read it during commercials of my beloved football games.

I wish I were one of those people who can read multiple things at once, but I'm not. I'd get a novel going on the side and forsake the non-fiction for that. Especially if it's a good novel. It's not that the essay collection is boring or anything, it's just that I need all my faculties about me to take it all in...and that's hard to come by on a weeknight.

This weekend I'm looking forward to seeing some friends for the Georgia game tomorrow, and hanging with the hubster on Sunday. He's FINALLY done with his week and a half of working nights, so...that'll be nice. Keep your fingers crossed for him. He had two job interviews today and we're really hoping he gets one of them!

Pretend It's Still...Mailbox Monday!

I forgot to do my Mailbox Monday post yesterday. Then I remembered, but it was too late, since Monday Night Football was starting. So, sorry I'm a little late.
I haven't participated in a few weeks, mostly because I haven't GOTTEN anything in the last few weeks. The hubs and I are trying to stick to a budget, and that means no room for purchased books. But I'm still using BookMooch, and this week I received one of my Mooched books. I'm on a bit of a sci-fi kick right now, and I'm collecting Andre Norton's Witch World series, one book at a time. I've already gotten Sorceress of the Witch World and WareHawk. This week, I received a copy of Web of the Witch World. I'd ordered the original, just titled Witch World, but the Moocher never replied, so I had to cancel and try again. Hopefully, I'll be getting that one in time for next week's MM.
What did you find in YOUR mailbox this week?

Friday Fill-Ins!

1. I have a history of not communicating well.

2. Real estate law is something I wish I knew.

3. I'm eating (or recently ate) a roast beef sammich.

4. I love to be on the road.

5. So that's it, that's the end.

6. Another question is better than nothing!

7. And as for the weekend, last night I was looking forward to our annual fundraiser for the United Way, today my plans included watching my Dawgs play LSU and tomorrow, I want to watch the Dolphins and hang with my hubby!

********************************

We got some bad news this week. The house that we are renting, which we JUST moved into about two months ago, has gone into foreclosure. We're still not sure what that means for us. It could mean moving again before we're ready (and we REALLY don't want to leave this house). Or it could mean an unforeseen opportunity to buy the house (although we're not really ready for THAT, either). I'm hoping for the latter. We love the house and the neighborhood, and our long-range plan was to try to buy it. I was heartbroken when I heard, but I'm in fix-it mode now. So we're withholding rent, putting it essentially in escrow in our savings account, since the JERK who entered into the lease with us in July knew he hadn't paid his mortgage since April, and I refuse to pay him another red cent to live here. If the bank wants us as tenants, we'll happily pay them, but we'd rather try to work out a sweet deal on the purchase of the property. Time will tell, I guess, but it's hard to just sit here and wait.
