Friday night, and I'm catching up on my Google Reader.
It's been an unproductive reading week here. I'm in the middle of Angela Carter's Shaking a Leg, which is a collection of her literary criticism and other articles she wrote, mostly for New Society. It covers a variety of topics and I'm finding that I quite enjoy her acidic writing style and thought-provoking pieces. She was a feminist of the 1970's variety, if anyone knows what I mean by that. I think they call it First-Wave Feminism? I'm not up on the lingo. I love her scathing review of Linda Lovelace's autobiography. (Linda Lovelace was, I believe, the "actress" who starred in Deep Throat...I had to ask my husband about that one!)
Anyway, this isn't meant to be an in-depth review of the work (I'm only about one sixth of the way through the monstrous thing). BUT what I'm trying to say is...I haven't gotten much accomplished on it this week. I was in jury selection Monday, which tired me out too much to read anything quite as heavy and intellectual as Carter's essays. And I was in trial Wednesday (well, supposed to be...), so I spent most of Tuesday night putting the final touches on my case. When the thing pled out on Wednesday, I was then too exhausted from the stress to pick up the book. All I could manage was Glee. Last night was a night full of TV with the hubby, so that leaves me...nowhere, really. I seem to get through more of the book when I read it during commercials of my beloved football games.
I wish I were one of those people who can read multiple things at once, but I'm not. I'd get a novel going on the side and forsake the non-fiction for that. Especially if it's a good novel. It's not that the essay collection is boring or anything, it's just that I need all my faculties about me to take it all in...and that's hard to come by on a weeknight.
This weekend I'm looking forward to seeing some friends for the Georgia game tomorrow, and hanging with the hubster on Sunday. He's FINALLY done with his week and a half of working nights, so...that'll be nice. Keep your fingers crossed for him. He had two job interviews today and we're really hoping he gets one of them!

Haven't Read a Thing in Weeks
Well. My first week in the new office is behind me. I'm a bit homesick, when I have time, but am starting to get a handle on things, I think. Ricky and I are still unpacking the house. I just finished the kitchen today, so we can get back to cooking, instead of getting take-out all the time! We still have work to do on the house, but it's coming along, slowly but surely.
I have had ZERO time, or inclination, really, to read in the last few weeks. I can't find my book in this mess, anyway, so it's not a big deal. I've been catching up on about three weeks' worth of blog-reading that I didn't do (over 400 entries in my feed reader!), so that's keeping me busy. Usually, I'm simply too tired after work and the commute and unpacking to much more than rot on the couch. We're watching a lot of Food Network and Golden Girls reruns, since the summer is winding down. Hopefully, things will get back to normal soon (and I'll find my book). I just got a new BookMarks magazine and a new Glamour to peruse, so maybe that will kick me out of my funk! But college football season is starting soon, so I'll have another distraction to battle...always something.

Books to Movies/TV Mini-Challenge
The challenge this hour (these hours?) is to post about books which have been made into TV series or movies, books you WANT to see made into movies or TV series, and TV series and movies you would like to see in book form.
TV or Movie Adaptations I like:
Anne of Green Gables - loved the Kevin Sullivan adaptation, although I watched it BEFORE I read the book, and I remember being crushed about the parts of the mini-series that differed from the book. The second one wasn't as good, since it smushed together several of the sequels into one movie. I hear there's a third, but haven't seen it.
Harry Potter - I haven't seen all of these, but the casting is great, and I think they are as true to the books as they can be in the time allotted to movies.
Lord of the Rings - OF COURSE I love these movies. What more can I say? They were excellently done.
Pride and Prejudice - Ah, Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. Le sigh. And, speaking of Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy...
Bridget Jones' Diary - although I'm not sure I'd pick Renee Zellweger to be Bridget.

Was Four Weddings and a Funeral based on a book? If not, I'd like to read it in novel form. LOVE that movie.
What about the new TV series Castle? Based on a thriller writer's need to create a new series, I think this would made great reading.

For Fans of Alexander McCall Smith
I'm in the midst of a trial this week, but I wanted to share this with you all:
A friend of mine brought to my attention the fact that HBO is running a series based on Alexander McCall Smith's No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. I know he's got lots of fans out there, so do check it out. I believe the show is on Sunday nights, but the link has all the info.
I've not read any of that series yet, but I did read 44 Scotland Street last year. I'm not a huge fan (yet), but I know many out there in blogland are. Check back in and let me know if the show is any good!

Castle
Okay, so last night I tuned in to Nathan Fillion's new show, Castle. It's about a thriller writer, a la James Patterson (who guest starred last night, along with Stephen J. Cannell!), who starts working with the police. Richard Castle has just published his latest book, which killed off his main character, Derek Storm. The episode which aired last night was all about how he got started working with the police in the first place: someone was staging murders to resemble the murders in his "lesser works," heh, and he was called in to consult. At the end of the episode, he decides to start writing a new series focused on a detective who greatly resembles the female detective he was helping, and he needs to work with the police force for "research."
At the beginning of last night's episode, the writing was so weak I was rolling my eyes. But by the middle, I was engrossed in the whodunnit. I'll probably tune in again next week, but mostly because I love Nathan Fillion. Although the stunt-casting of Patterson and Cannell as Castle's poker buddies was pretty funny. We'll see if the show can keep it up.

1. Name a TV show series in which you have seen every episode at least twice: Scrubs - Ricky's a HUGE fan, and it's on in syndication, so we're always falling asleep to it. I know some episodes by heart.
2. Name a show you can’t miss: Heroes (or I won't know what the HECK is going on) and The Amazing Race.
3. Name an actor that would make you more inclined to watch a show: David Duchovny, unless the show is on a premium channel (Californication?!), and also Nathan Fillion...can't wait for his new show to premiere!

Survivors
Well, we made it safely through Tropical Storm Fay, with no more damage than some puddles and a broken umbrella. I got to miss work on Tuesday and Wednesday, which SHOULD have made for more reading time, but instead made for more play-drunken-board-games-with-friends time. And the Olympics. They are killing my reading time! And, pretty soon, it will be a new TV season, which means there will be new shows to watch and old favorites to get back into. I can't wait for Heroes and Chuck, particularly, to start back up, as well as The Office and 30 Rock. (I swear, not all of my TV-watching is on NBC, but you wouldn't know it from this post!)
This week I've received Barbara Taylor Bradford's
A Woman of Substance from BookMooch, as well as a copy of The Empress of Weehawken from Picador and LibraryThing. Now I just need to read and review it!
